On 26 March, a special ceremony was held to mark the retirement of long-standing SSVP servant, George Newman. After 44 years’ dedicated service, ‘Uncle’ George took the decision to stand down for health reasons.
Speaking on behalf of the members of St Anthony’s, Claude Philander said, “You will always be with us and fondly remembered. We will continue to communicate with you and also always keep you in our prayers.”
Germaine Landsberg (Durban) said that George was a true Vincentian and a good role model for the Society.
In response, Brother George said, “I want to take this opportunity to thank every member of the Society who shared in the celebrations of thanksgiving on my retirement. I only retire from my duties; in spirit I will always be a member of SSVP.
“I want to thank you for your love, your prayers, your co-operation and your respect. Always remember that any member in your conference is important. I thank God, for the guidance of his holy spirit in my service of St Vincent De Paul. I’ll always remember the society in my prayers. May St Vincent, Blessed Frederick Ozanam, and the good Lord bless you.”
The following Friday, while he was en route to a training session in Namqualand, National President, Peter Keshwar, dropped in to personally thank brother George for his service and dedication to the Society.
Peter presented George with a replica crucifix of Blessed Fredrick Osman, as well as additional gifts from the National Council. Brother George was surprised, humbled and grateful for the visit and kind gesture from our National President and council.
